Drank TequilaAnd sang Tom Jones music ("She's a Lady, whoa whoa whoa") at kereoke in Lancaster, PA Christmas week. I have found my calling. Sadly, I've
learned that the only thing worse than getting dumped is getting dumped twice in a year (effective 3am New Year's Day. Involved police and everything). The rebound is over. Susan the psycho decided it's time to get back with her ex. Two days short of 6 months. Less property to split up this time. Still hurts though. My plan now is to find a wealthy widow. I scan the obituaries, looking for something like "Dr. Jones is survived by his parents and his widow, Mary."<br><br>Saw "A Beautiful Mind" (Russell Crowe). Excellent. But then, it's hard for any movie that deals with schizophrenia not to be good.<br><br>"Vanilla Sky": Major disappointment. Dover DownsI spent this weekend at the Nascar race in Dover Downs. What a gong show, man. We were out riding our bikes at midnight watching all of the craziness happen.Pretty cool experience.
I actually got to go into the garage pits and ride around on the race track (in a golf cart, but still!). Pretty amazing how steep those turns are - they are hard to walk, much less drive a really expensive car on it.
Went camping for the first time in my life. Not a bad experience, all things considered. The whole event was kind of like a Dead show. Except it wasn't nearly as hot as it was when we were all at the Sandstone Ampitheatre in KS(that was the name, right?) sweating to death when Jerry opened the show with the song Cold Rain & Snow (or something like that). Everyone was very friendly and stuff.
Well, you guys should have fun pissing in Uge's cornfield. I'll try to remember to take photos at the Dome and will get scanned the ones look like they would be of interest to anyone. The photos probably won't be as interesting as the ones I could have taken at Dover, but then they wouldn't get developed anyway, so what's the point.

Re: NovelsPete, I think all the good guys are from the WEST--Not the midwest. Daisy was from Louisville (aka, home of Greg Kosse), and her husband was from Chicago. I I haven't read Of M&M in years. I'll read it again. I remember
reading Cannery Row about 5 years ago and liking it, but not thinking it was up to GG.
I think that your analysis is what they tell both high school and college students.
What is your reading on both the green light that Gatsby stares at across the bay at Daisy's house and the advertisement of the Dr's eyes above the mechanics house? IF the eyes are like the conscience of society, what does it mean that the conscious is derived from an advertisment? Is God now a commodity in Gatsby's age?
What really is the green light and Gatsby's pursuit of Daisy? The narrator says that Gatsby's had gobs of other women before. He even had Daisy before he was in the military. Is it only to "fit in" to the upper class? Gatsby has shitloads of money now. All kinds of people come to his parties, but they are all "new money" people, (e.g. people in the entertainment industry and jews). IS Gatsby really that shallow of a character that he is one-dimensionally trying to bang Daisy?

Re: NovelsThis is the voice of your MBA chum. If you really want to get a head in life (as well as get some head in life), write a novel designed to be adopted by high school and college English survey curriculums.
Something all the pot-smoking teachers will dig, like about how all the MBA's are turning America into vapid wasteland of Britney Spears and McDonald's, where the only authentic Americans left are black studio musicians in Memphis, who get paid well but would never be taken on tour by the racist country-western stars they put on the map. I read recently that Steinbeck sells 2 million books a year, even now. If you could even a fraction of that from h.s. and college bookstores you could retire to Vegas, or Missoula, and drink tequila all day.
Re: NovelsThank you for the literary commentary. Having them on my coffee table really seems to impress the 23 year old post-Villanova chicks I've been having over

Re: dostoyevski and fitzgerald articleI learned (and in some cases re-learned) a lot in that chapter on Dostoyevsky and Fitzgerald. A good critic, and Jeffrey Hart in particular, is v. useful for placing the 20th-century novel in
historical / literary / philosophical context of previous modes, e.g. Bronze Age epics, medieval morality crap, romanticism, enlightenment, etc. But for me the best part of his discussion of Fitzgerald was the passage about how "GG" is a story of transformation and its effects. America has always been about ambitions of various kinds. And to a greater extent than ever before, each American generation since the turn of the 20th century has had the power to re-make the themselves in ways previously unimaginable -- to change jobs, marry up, move from place to place, etc. Fitzgerald's point is that such application of American free enterprise attitudes to the individual self is a central tenet of the American character -- French people don't try to remake themselves, for example, instead every couple generations they try to remake all of society in some radical way; English people, meanwhile, try their damndest to preserve the strata that define their society, and the lowest levels were the ones who mourned Diana the hardest and celebrated the Queen's recent jubilee the most. Americans, on the other hand, are about re-tooling the individual. And this has its effects, some intended and some unforeseen. Jay Gatsby, for instance, probably wouldn't have guessed how his story would play out when he left home, and he may well have stayed put and married a local girl if he had known.

Re: dostoyevski and fitzgerald articleI don't doubt what you are saying about transformation, but what does that have to do with dostoyevsky? What does it mean in gatsby that despite all of his transformations,
from names to fathers etc. that he dies in a mistaken murder and no one (or vitually no one) attends his funeral. I still think there is much more going on in GG that transformation alone.

Re: of mice and menThe common theme is pussy. Nobody sees it, like Lenny didn't see it. He thought he wanted land but what he really wanted was pussy -- that's why they made retarted, to highlight the lack of mental
acuity. The urbanites in Gatspy wanted it too. It's the common struggle for the one thing Men don't control. That's why they called it Of mice and MEN. Of Mice and Pussy would have been way to offensive in the 20's or whenever it was published. I'm sure they considered it.

Re: of mice and menI'll go for pussy as far as Gatsby is concerned. Steinbeck is amazingly unpussyful. If his characters bought the farm, or had enough money to go to the the cathouse, then there would be pussy, but
these guys don't even have a home. Pussy isn't even on the agenda. Lenny is too fucking dumb to know what to do with pussy even if he had it.

Re: hotornotJust got home from my Saturday night "first date" with "Raine." Thirty, blonde, former stripper. We were hanging at this kereoke bar when all of a sudden at 1a.m. the DJ says "there are roving DUIcheck points all over the area." Needless to say, we decided to spend the night at the Travelodge. Third time I've scored with an internet date on the first date.
One for one, and now I'm off to Dover for my Sunday adventure with "Veronica."
Go Irish. Looked like a good game. So much for Air Force's 40 point per game offense.

Re: hotornotThat's not Tanya. Tanya is hot and blond. The date with the Dover chick "Veronica" was a typical first date. No action. After awhile I said "well, it's time for me to go."
Later we chatted on-line; she wondered why I left so abruptly. I said I didn't want things to move too fast (chicks love that shit). She wants more. Her body is hot. I'll give her another chance. Two more chances at most. No more 4-month trial periods here.
ND. 7-0 straight up and 7-0 against the spread. Probably the first time that's ever happened. Getting 10 points vs. FL State. I'd take the points and the Irish.
